  • 26 September to 12 October 2008 - New York Film Festival - Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, this is a selective showcase of new, inspiring and provocative cinema by both emerging talent and recognised international artists.
     
  • 2 to 5 October 2008 - Las Vegas Bikefest - Free entertainment, displays, demo rides, contests and parties are just some of the action at the Bikefest.
     
  • 3,4,5 October 2008 - BayFest - Mobile's Music Festival - Make merry on the streets of downtown Mobile, Alabama for three days and nights to the strains of more than 100 live musical acts.
     
  • 4 & 5 October 2008 - Morro Bay Harbor Festival  - A community celebration of coastal lifestyles and livelihoods with three stages of entertainment, fun for kids, food and drink, displays, expos, arts and crafts and more.
     
  • October 13 - Columbus Day (second Monday in October)
     
  • 9 to 12 October 2008 - National Shrimp Festival - is an outdoor festival held annually in the heart of Gulf Shores, Alabama featuring art, food and music.
     
  • 3 October to 9 November - San Francisco Jazz Festival  - An internationally acclaimed two-week celebration of today's best music.
     
  • 18 & 19 October 2008 - Kentuck Festival of the Arts - celebrates a variety of artistic styles ranging from folk to contemporary arts as well as traditional crafts, in Northport, Alabama.
     
  • 18 October 2008 (Sunday) - Detroit Free Press Marathon The marathon, half marathon and team relays offer an international course crossing the US and Canadian border twice via the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel (the only underwater international mile in the world). In addition to the international course, participants will experience the true spirit of Detroit passing through Corktown, Mexicantown, Belle Isle, Indian Village and Greektown before finishing on the 50 yard line of Ford Field, home of the 2006 Super Bowl XL.
